Upcoming Events
The Ontario Wine Society has lots of fun events throughout the year that members are welcome to join! See below to see what's coming up next in your chapter!
Niagara Chapter
Tuesday, September 21, 2010
The future of wine is connection — between winemakers and the land, winemakers and consumers. The future of wine is freedom — freedom from brand restrictions and expensive facilities; the freedom to
experience new grapes and wine styles. The future of wine is - depending on the return of the artisanal craft
of winemaking. The future of wine is – virtual wineries.
Virtual wineries have been around for nearly two decades around the world, so declaring them “the
next big thing” may at first seem like a bit of a stretch. The real innovation is not the fact that winemakers are
moving to virtual wineries (that is, producing wine at a shared facility, without a “brick and mortar” retail
store), but, rather, the role these wineries are playing in the continued growth of the Ontario wine industry.
Starting up a virtual winery gives a winemaker the opportunity to utilize their own style and skills, without
the great expense of purchasing their own estate.

Oakville Chapter
Oakville Chapter’s first event for the 2010–2011 season promises to be educational and
entertaining to both new and ‘vintage’ wine lovers alike – making it a perfect event to
introduce a friend to wine tasting and to the OWS!
“Awaken Your Wine Senses” will be presented by Peter Bodnar Rod, wine educator,
certified sommelier, and Director of Sales, Marketing & Hospitality for 13th Street
Winery.
As an experienced educator, Peter will help us savour the smells and tastes
of oak and malo influences, maturing and softening of tannins and acidity,
and residual sugars and will lead us in discovering the effect of foods on our
perception of these flavours and textures.

Toronto Chapter
Jim Warren, founder and current General Manager, will be there to lead the tasting of Stoney Ridge’s current and library wines,
reminisce on the past 25 years and talk about the future.
In July of 1985, Stoney Ridge Cellars became the 18th licensed winery in the fledgling Ontario wine industry. The winery had inauspicious beginnings at the Weylie farm on Ridge Road in Stoney Creek, consisting of a small barn and garage that served as a retail boutique. Under the direction of Winemaker Jim
Warren and his two business partners, Stoney Ridge’s first vintage consisted of
500 cases of 11 different wines, produced
entirely by hand. Stoney Ridge Cellars had a commitment to “make small amounts of
the very best wine possible from Ontario grapes.
