There is not a man or woman, who appreciates wine in Canada, who is unaware that Canadian wine has
come a long way in a dramatically short time. And, we are all rather proud of that fact.
Finally, we have a new cultural symbol that places us uniquely within the gastronomic league of nations.
The Canadian Wine Awards was established in 2001 by Wine Access magazine, with the sponsorship of Air Canada,
to provide a sounding board for the advancement of Canadian wine. We have created a platform for debate
through a highly technical, objective review of Canadian wine performed by experienced Canadian judges
who have no problem understanding quality as a concept divorced from patriotism. The awards receive no
industry or government funding and the judges are not in the professional employ of wineries or retailers.
In the first year, the awards attracted over 500 entries from over 70 wineries - signaling the wine industry's
eagerness to have an independent, objective review. The complete results were published in the November 2001
edition of Wine Access, with the major winners listed at www.wineaccessmag.com.
