The Ontario Wine Society is again offering a mid-winter pick-me-up to Society members and their guests. The annual Ice Wine Weekend is a wonderful way to brighten the dull, frigid days of February. Spoil yourself with some great wine, great food and great accommodation!

This year the host winery is Marynissen Estates, the creation of John Marynissen. He came to Canada from Holland in 1952 and began growing grapes with his wife Nanny. Realizing the importance of vinifera grapes for the production of quality wines, John switched to planting vinifera vines in the 1970’s and was the first to plant Cabernet Sauvignon in Canada in 1978. As a young amateur winemaker, John received several awards for his winemaking. For his vineyards, he was awarded the title of Grape King in 1978. His 1987 Riesling won the Best Estate Bottles Wine Award at the American Wine Society competition in 1989 in Pittsburgh.

Establishing the winery in 1990, John was able to boast having some of the oldest vinefera vines in Ontario. These vines, combined with Niagara’s unique micro-climate, provide the infrastructure for Marynissen Estates Wines. In the fall of 1990, John won the Best of Show Award for his 1989 Chardonnay and the Konstantin Frank Award for Best Vinefera Wine at the American Wine Society competition in Philadelphia.

Enjoying more leisure time now, John has passed the reins of Marynissen on to his daughter Sandra and her husband Glen.

Dinner as well as accommodations will be at White Oaks Inn & Resort. This hotel, just off the QEW at Glendale Avenue, is renown for its dining facilities and menus. It also features luxurious, well-appointed rooms, a fabulous fitness and recreation centre as well as many other amenities. Valet parking, use of the pool and work out facilities and breakfast are all included. For dinner, a pre-selection of the entrée will be required.

Ice Wine Weekend

ITINERARY

3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Private Tasting Tour hosted by Glen Muir of Marynissen. As we are taken on our tour of Marynissen and shown the interesting features of the winery, we will also be treated to tastings of five older red wines from their library. As we will be inside and out, casual, warm clothing is suggested. Due to inclement weather the past few years, Marynissen will not be able to provide any Icewine to taste. Icewine included with the dinner will be from the Ontario Wine Society cellar.

4:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. – Return to White Oaks Inn & Resort. Guests now have the opportunity to check into the hotel (if they haven’t done so already), rest (or explore the resort) and prepare for dinner.

6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. – Dinner at White Oaks Guests will be treated to a unique five-course meal featuring some of the specialties of White Oaks (see below) The menu has been selected to pair with some of the finer red wines that Marynissen is famous for as well as a taste of the latest vintage white.
