If indicated (see below), you can be picked up in Oakville. Also a limited number of people from our Niagara Chapter can join us at the wineries & not go on the bus.

Lunch will be a 3 course meal with matching wine at the Niagara Culinary Institute; Jim Warren to speak at the lunch.

As well as having us do the driving, you will have that unique opportunity to buy wines only available at the winery as well as new releases. We include 3 private tastings, 2 tours and a gourmet lunch with wine. The bus trip gives you a chance to enjoy the scenery, relax & have an opportunity to puchase wines that are only available at the winery or are new releases.

Niagara-On-The-Lake Bus Trip

NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE

The largest viticultural area in Canada, where there is about 75% of Canada's grape growing volume, is the Niagara Peninsula. The growing season's sunshine is comparable to Tuscany in Italy and Languedoc-Rousillon in France (south of Burgundy and Bordeaux). VQA has given the Niagara Peninsula 2 regions: Niagara-on-the-Lake and Niagara Escarpment. With 10 new subregions named by VQA in the Niagara Peninsula, we will visit the 3 (Niagara River, St. Davids Bench & Niagara Lakeshore) that are part of the Niagara-on-the-Lake.

WINERIES

LAILEY VINEYARD WINERY

Winemaker: Derek Barnett

In 1970, Donna & David Lailey purchased David's parents' farm that was at the time planted to French hybrids & mixed fruit. They began a steady transformation of the 20-acre parcel into a vineyard, planting vitis vinifera. Donna was the only female founding member of VQA. Derek Barnett was born & studied agriculture in the UK. He came to Canada in 1973, & in 1991 became the winemaker for Southbrook winery. In 2000, he was voted Winemaker of the year at the Air Ontario wine awards. In the fall of 2001, Derek moved to Niagara-on-the-Lake to become winemaker & business partner at Lailey Vineyard.

The winery specializes in producing small lots of distinctive wines that express the character of the grape, the vintage, and the soil and climate of the vineyard. The winery gained acclaim in 2002 for its successful release of the first commercially made wines (Chardonnay 2001) aged in Canadian Oak. A special selection of grapes from each vintage is dedicated to ageing in Canadian oak barrels.

NIAGARA COLLEGE TEACHING (NCT) WINERY

Winemakers: Jim Warren & Jordan Harris

Located on the Glendale campus at the base of the Niagara Escarpment, NCT has 3 onsite vineyards for a total of 38 acres. Steve Gill is the Manager of the winery & vineyard. NCT is Canada's first & only commercial teaching winery. Jim Warren was previously owner/winemaker of Stoney Ridge winery. Recent awards include: Gold at 2006 Canada wine awards (2004 Warren Classic Chardonnay); 2006 Cuvee (best pinot noir, best limited edition white).

KONZELMANN ESTATE WINERY

Winemakers: Herbert Konzelmann & Matthias Boss

Family owned & operated in Stuttgart-Uhlbach, Germany since 1893, the winery was re-established in Canada in 1988 by Gudrun & Herbert Konzelmann. The site, on the shores of Lake Ontario, has a similar meso-climate to Alsace. Their philosophy to combine an unsurpassed dedication with the culmination of four generations of oenology has resulted in the production of nationally & internationally award-winning VQA crafted wines. They have over 30 different VQA wines.
