Date: Monday, November 22, 2004; Reception 6:00pm, Tasting 6:30pm
Members: $25    Non-Members: $35.

The last time we had this kind of event was in 2001, so we felt that we were overdue for a repeat. This tasting will feature showcase wines from some of Ontario's newer wineries, including those from Niagara, Lake Erie North Shore and Prince Edward County.

We will have Steve Thurlow take us through the tasting. He is part of the eastern Canada editorial team at Wine Access magazine. With his friend and colleague, David Lawrason, he runs the Wine Access School, teaching consumers about wine appreciation and selection. He is a wine judge at the Annual Canadian Wine Awards and frequently appears at corporate and private wine tastings, and is the Chair of the Wine Selection Committee for Sante. Steve is the Education Director for Canada's Independent Wine Educational Guild (IWEG).

HUFFF ESTATES:
The history of Huff's Estates goes back to the 1820's when the family settled in Prince Edward County as United Empire Loyalists. Today, Huff's 3 vineyards total 45 acres of vitis vinifera, focusing on Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Gris. Construction of the winery was completed in 2003, with the grand opening on June 12, 2004. The winery boasts a kitchen for light lunches, relaxing waterfall, helicopter pad, floor to ceiling windows in the retail store, moat enclosed patio, and observation deck. The winery is owned and operated by Lanny Huff, B.A.Sc

WAUPOOS:
Waupoos can be found within the apple orchards of Waupoos, a native Indian name meaning rabbit. Located on County Road 8, alongside the scenic shores of Prince Edward Bay, the family estate is nestled in the southeast of historic Prince Edward County. In 1993 a small vineyard was pioneered and it was proved that the "terroir" was ideal for producing quality wine grapes. Soon, plans were made to establish the winery. The initial groundbreaking took place in the year 2000. The first vineyard and winery in "The County" was opened in 2001

MALETA:
Stan Maleta, and his wife Marilyn, launched Maleta Vineyards & Estate Winery in 1998 on Queenston Rd in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Its location and heritage made it desirable as it sits adjacent to what was once the Sunnieholme Winery, founded in 1918, and on what was probably the site of Niagara's first commercial vineyard, developed in the mid 1800s. They planted Bordeaux reds, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, for blending into their award-winning Meritage. Production also includes Gamay and Riesling from 35-year-old vines.

PENINSULA RIDGE:
Opened in August 2000, owner Norman Beal has made every effort to meet the many requirements for producing world-class wine in Niagara. By combining New Age technology with Old World tradition, winemaker Jean-Pierre Colas' focus is to find the best expression of Niagara - its soils, climate and geography - in wines of supreme quality and character.

ERIE SHORE VINEYARDS:
Erie Shore Vineyard is located right at the 42nd parallel. Located just 600 meters from the shore of Lake Erie, the area is ideally suited for the production of world class grapes and wine. Erie Shore Vineyard specializes in 100% estate grown, VQA wines. These wines are available only at the vineyard winery store and only available in limited quantities. Erie Shore Vineyard is owned and operated by Harvey & Alma Hollingshead.

PALATINE HILLS ESTATE WINERY:
Located in Niagara-on-the-lake, Palatine Hills is a boutique winery offering visitors a select range of wines including their specialty ice wines. Owners John and Barbara Neufeld, in collaboration with winemaker David Hojnoski, started producing small batches of ice wine in the late 1990's, and moved into production of other table wines in 2001. They now produce Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, as well as their award-winning Vidal Ice Wine.

LEGENDS ESTATES WINERY:
In 1946, John Lizak planted the seeds of enterprise on a tender fruit farm of a dozen acres. The fertile soil and microclimate of the Niagara peninsula fed his passion and as time passed, the customs of working the land were handed down from father, to son, to grandson. A half century later, a boutique winery was born on Lake Ontario under John's grandson, Paul Lizak; two-hundred acres of fruit and signature grapes to be farmed carefully and harvested gently. Today, Legends Estates produces fruit wines, grape wines, ice wines and special reserves, all richly styled with quality and care.

ANGEL'S GATE:
Angel's Gate was founded by a group of wine loving friends on a property that was once owned by the Congregation of Missionary Sisters of Christian Charity in Ontario. During the 1950's and 60's the property had become a mink farm, but when mink fell out of fashion the property was left abandoned. In 1995, the land was converted into a vineyard. Construction of the "mission style" building began in June of 2001. Angels Gate maintains two separate vineyards: Angels Gate Estate Vineyard is composed of 10 acres of vinifera, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer, and Angels Gate Vineyards, with 25 acres of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Shiraz.

NIAGARA COLLEGE WINERY:
Located in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Niagara College's newest Campus features a living lab - acres of vineyards where students experience hands-on training, a new teaching winery, science laboratories, state-of-the-art technologies, and the future location of a world recognized culinary institute. Students experience supervised placements with local and international wine industry employers for development of practical skills on the job.
