"The quest for a Pinot Noir wine which comes near to matching a Cote d'0r Grand Crus has become like a Holy Grail, especially for New World wine makers … It is the most capricious of all grape varieties, demanding forbearance and respect from the grower, winemaker and drinker. It is highly sensitive to climate, soil, training and vinification. At its best it produces wines that are sensuous, magnificently perfumed and seductively fleshy. At its worst, it is meager with angular offerings of charmless, raw, stalky flavours and enough acidity to run a car battery." (Remington Norman - The Great Domains of Burgundy) Come taste for yourself how well the New World winemakers are doing. We've chosen to showcase the Ontario Pinot Noirs from the outstanding 2002 vintage and see how they compare with their same-vintage contemporaries around the world. Konrad Ejbich, ('the palate that walks') the author of the about-to-be-released "A Pocket Guide to Ontario Wines, Vineyards And Vines", will lead the tasting. Konrad has led many Ontario Wine Society and other tasting events. He is the "resident wine expert" on CBC-Radio, with monthly appearances on Ontario Today. He is a correspondent for the Wine Spectator and writes a column for Style at Home. The wines will be tasted semi-blind, that is, we will know the wines that we are tasting, but we won't know which one is in which glass.
The Ontario Club will be preparing a snack to compliment these wines. Dinner is available after the tasting in the Ontario Club dining room. Underground parking is available at a reduced rate (presently $7.00), after 6pm. The entrance is off Wellington St., which is South of King St. and runs one way West from Yonge St. Make 3 left turns. Park and take the East elevators. For information only, call 416-921-9798, Reservations will not be taken over the phone or at the door. Please make cheques payable to the Ontario Wine Society and send in an envelope postmarked no later than Tuesday, October 12, 2005. Cancellations will be accepted until October 12 by calling the Wine Line at 416-921-9798.

Pinot Noir - A 2002 Horizontal Tasting Tasting Rooms: 'Au Revoir' With the closing (sold & will be under renovations as a new restaurant), of the Tasting Rooms, the Ontario Wine Society will now be meeting at the Ontario Club. We will miss the intimacy of the Tasting Rooms' people (Chris & Henry) & facility, as well as the extraordinary food-value/price they were able to provide to us. Ontario Club: Our New Venue Still, we are optimistic, that overall our new facility should equal what the Tasting Rooms had provided. We will be in an attractive, more spacious setting, with an ability to accommodate our ever-increasing membership, to our tastings. Unfortunately, we did lose complementary parking. We also decided to keep our cost per tasting equivalent to previous years. This has necessitated changing from a selection of appetizers, to instead serving a SNACK plate. As always, we will welcome constructive comments from our members on our necessary change of location. Ontario Club: Access Commerce Court is on the southeast corner of King & Bay St. and consists of 4 buildings with a courtyard. The smallest building is the South building with the Ontario Club located on the top of the 5th floor. It can be accessed (1) through the underground Food Court; look for the Wellington St. exit or (2) more easily via the Courtyard through the doors in the middle of the building with the Ontario Club crest (behind the elephants!!). |
